Research Interests
I have long been involved in literary scholarship and criticism, with a particular focus on the fields of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. In addition to having written several books on these topics, I've been a monthly book review columnist for LOCUS magazine since 1992.
Awards

Publications: Essays
Over the years, I have contributed more than two hundred essays to academic journals, reference works, encyclopedias, and magazines, and among the more recent are essays on authors Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, Jane Yolen, Joanna Russ, and Ray Bradbury. A chapter titled Science Fiction and Its Editors appeared in The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction, (Cambridge University Press, 2003), and a long annotated bibliography of science fiction scholarship appears in the new edition of the library reference work Anatomy of Wonder (Libraries Unlimited, 2005). I am currently completing a collection of my essays for Wesleyan University Press.
