Research Interests
My research interests include health psychology, evaluation of the efficacy of psychotherapy, and cultural/ethnic studies. I am interested in how adults, children, and families cope with having chronic illness, the impact of illness on family, school, and community functioning, and psychoneuroimmunological aspects of illness. My recent research has focused on adults and children with chronic fatigue syndrome, a controversial and often misunderstood chronic illness. In addition, I am most interested in how cultural factors, including acculturation, can impact an individual's physical and psychological well-being; and, more generally, in issues of social justice and training around multiculturalism/diversity. Finally, I am interested in evaluating the efficacy of psychotherapy and community-based psychological interventions. Currently, I am working with a local community mental health center to evaluate a women's program and evaluate the validity of consumer-developed measures of general health and well-being; developing a scale to measure orientation to social justice; evaluating the reliability and validity of a measure of self-injury/.self-harm behaviors; and measuring attitudes towards chronic fatigue syndrome and their relationship with ethnic/cultural variables.
