Current research and writing

Bill Schubert, Ann Lopez-Schubert, Wayne Carroll, and I have completed a revision of Bill and Ann's 1981 text, Curriculum Books: The First 80 Years. Bill and Ann's original identification of 3 perspectives in U.S. curriculum thought has been revised to incorporate a critical reconstructionist and conciliarist perspectives and identifying scholars who stand outside these orientations. All chapters have been critically revised in light of these new categories. Curriculum Books: The first one hundred years is available from Peter Lang www.peterlangusa.com

Bill Schubert and I presented a roundtable at the American Educational Research Association in New Orleans at the 2000 Annual Meeting.  The perspective pieces that we drafted for this roundtable, "Responding to Standards: The Professor of Education's Legacy" and "Certification, Content Standards and the Professor of Education's Responsibilities" have been included in the Encyclopedia on Educational Standards, under the editorship of Joseph Kincheloe and Danny Weil.  It has been published by ABC Clio.

I have completed the research on a historical study of the origins of grading systems in US schools I have found that I have enough to try for a book rather than a journal piece. I plan on submitting the work for publication in 2009.

I am currently serving on the editorial board for the Encyclopedia of Curriculum Studies with Craig Kridel serving as principal editor. I have also accepted invitation to write several entries for this volume. The ECS is scheduled for publication at the end of 2009.

Greg Hauser, a colleague at Roosevelt, and I completed an evaluation study of the activities of 5 GEAR UP schools and presented our research findings at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association meeting in New Orleans in 2002.  The study is available by clicking below. I also include the PowerPoint summary of this small-scale study.

In a separate study, Greg, George Olson and I looked at types of tutoring services that were provided to the GEAR UP schools and their effectiveness in improving student performance on standardized testing in math and reading. This study was presented at the American Association of Colleges and Universities Meeting in St. Louis in October 2002.  This study is available below for review.

A third study by Hauser, Thomas and Olson looked at the impact that GEAR UP student services have had on student performance on standardized tests. This study was presented in 2007 at the AERA annual meeting. This paper is also posted to the web site for your consideration.

Student Services and Student Achievement

More recently Karen Choate, Greg Hauser and I have collaborated on a study of 8th grade to high school transitions. This has resulted in a paper presentation at AERA in 2008, a presentation on methodology the Hawaiian Conference at Education and a presentation on conclusions at an international education conference in Barcelona Spain in the summer of 2009.

I continue to work on the development of performance based assessment and scoring scales related to language arts and to my current work in pre-service teacher education. . I presented a round table at ATE in February, 1999 on the using scoring scales to facilitate teacher reflection. This paper has been posted on the web site for your consideration.

I participated in a discussion of instructional techniques for promoting multicultural understanding at Roosevelt this past spring. A piece based on this panel was produced as a monograph within the university.
