The following are the
comments received with the student evaluations of the course:
HOW WAS THIS AN EFFECTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE?
-Weiner’s text was well written, but not as complete as I had hoped for. Great Lectures. The overall structure was good.
-Dr. Choca is an exceptional lecturer, and his vast experience in the field makes for interesting anecdotal information and cases to work on. I always enjoy his classes, and come away having learned a lot.
-Having to administer a lot of batteries was very effective. Having quizzes also is a great learning experience. Learning the history of the Rorschach, TAT and projectives was also great.
-Great instructor. Thanks Dr. Choca.
-Many assignments, cases, suggestions intersected; lots of hands on experience, which helped us learn.
-I liked the opportunity to present case material and learn to debate (my 1st experience)
-A good amount of interpretation of tests. Presentations are good way of gaining a deep understanding. Lectures were well done.
-(What worked well was) the instructor, constant practicing of test protocols even though it was a lot of work.
-(The instructor) is great.
-It worked in some ways because we got to do a lot of practice with the Rorschach and TAT.
-It was pretty good overall.
-I hate to say it, but the large amount of work in this class was necessary and effective.
-The presentations helped to cover more information.
-Excellent course.
-It was good to have my own Rorschach Kit and not have to share. Receiving feedback on my tests was effective for me.
-Overall, I learned a lot. It was a challenging, yet “good” learning experience for me.
-It was a lot of independent work.
-I studied with greater depth and intensity the psychology testing; consequently, I believed I learned well the material.
-Dr. Choca is highly qualified to teach this course, cases very interesting.
-Awesome as usual.
HOW WAS THIS AN INEFFECTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE?
-Access to Exner system software would be nice, as we could work with additional vars for interpretation. More m-class coverage of TAT scoring, interp.
-The course became rushed towards the end leaving little time for discussion and questions that the various presentations brought up. Also, it would have been helpful to have more examples of Dr. Choca’s reports and interpretations of cases. There was a lack of closure-with students giving opinions, but little validation.
-The Weiner book was not very useful or needed. We would benefit as students from an entire course dedicated to the Rorschach. It was too crammed together and not enough time was spent on other projective. The debates and presentations were also too crammed. The work-administrations of batteries is so important, but it became wary.
-We used an older version of Hermann, which did not provide all scores that Exner and Weiner are using for interpretation-ethics quiz did not work at end of class.
-Too little feedback on progress and scoring ability.
-I did not like taking quizzes before the information was received. I did not like the way the quizzes and test scores were graded. The point system should have been clearer.
SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
-Examples of Rorschach & TAT interpose provided to students ahead of time. A bit more specifically re: assignments.
-I very much enjoyed the presentations, but given the time constraints and multitude of material, I think it would have been preferable to have more lecture time from Dr. Choca. Also, lack of feedback on the scoring of the first couple of cases until subsequent ones were due made things very difficult and was frustrating.
-Too cramped into 1 semester. It should be split up given the wide usage in the field of psychology of the Rorschach and TAT.
-Do not use quizzes at this level.
-I would like more hand holding in how to interpret the tests.
-Focus on how to interpret and score. I needed examples or a procedure on how to interpret (scoring is in book). I also at times (and my classmates have reported this as well) that I was not made aware of what your expectations were in the course work.
-Hold off on giving tests to score until it is lectured on. I understand the idea but it seems a little unfair for this subjective course material.
-Although I understand the point of doing presentations, I would’ve preferred to have spent more time on the material since we had so much to cover.
-I would only suggest that students be somehow warned about the amount of work required.
-“Know thyself” was the saying of the oracle. The study of one’s life. The class gave me a phenomenal opportunity to learn some project test; however, my recommendation is that the process starts with oneself. Follow with self and finishes with self, at the same time one practices (as we did). For example, one visualizes one’s own Rorschach, visualizes it through semester and reach (with a report) one’s own conclusion about self at the end of semester.
-Too many student presentations may have taken away time from valuable
lecture material.
Comments from Spring, 2006
· The Exner book was helpful.
· Rorschach book and cases
· Enjoyed the texts, scoring and interpreting cases. Tests were very helpful
· Student Debates
· Power-point presentation.
· RU Online Blackboard assignments
· The Hermann program was an excellent tool, as were the location charts in the Exner text.
· The overhead slides were a good visual aid. The pace of slides was helpful.
· In-class discussion.
·
You usually make students more aware of their
grades through the graphs you put up.
You did not do that in this course.
It would have been helpful to have a better idea where my grade was.
·
Because work-load is heavy spend less time on
debates
·
Printouts of power point presentations.
·
More feedback between assignments.
·
Do more in-class scoring of Rorschach as a
class.
·
Perhaps reducing the total number of scorings
and interpretation. This would allow for
learning but less students have time for other
pursuits.
·
Less evening, more focus on in class
interpretations, especially the ratios and special computations. The availability of cases on Blackboard was
great until the last 2 classes.
·
Change book on TAT to Bellack’s
Book “TAT, SAT,CAT in clinical practice.
·
I would have liked more time spent on
interpretation, especially of the Rorschach, because I felt like I struggled
with this.
·
More time on TAT interpretation.
·
Hard copies of expected interpretation, to have
to mull over for future reference.
